What is Super Brain Yoga ?

The brain is one of the most important organs in our body and controls vital functions including thinking, learning, creativity, the five senses, memory, emotion, problem solving, and decision making amongst others. Also, different parts of the brain have different functions. For example, the left-brain is more logical while the right-brain is more creative. However. due to several reasons we do not utilize the brain to its full capacity. An ancient technique is improvised and is called Super brain Yoga, is a simple and effective technique to energize and recharge the brain. It is based on the principles of subtle energy and ear acupuncture. This powerful technique is explained in Master Choa Kok Sui’s book Super brain Yoga. This exercise takes less than 60 seconds a day to perform. However, for best results ,consistency and the proper techniques needs to be followed:

  • Facing Right Direction
  • Correct Hand and Finger Positioning
  • Right Posture
  • Correct Breathing

Super Brain Yoga can be Practiced Daily by all age Groups.

Benefits

  • Upgrades the Brain Cells.
  • Balances the Right and Left Side of the Brain.
  • Increases concentration.
  • Increases Retaining Power.
  • Balances the Upper and the Lower Energy.

How it Works

Dr. Paul Nogier MD, a neurologist, spent 20 years from 1950 to about 1970 doing medical research. He rediscovered that the ears corresponded to the whole body. The ear corresponds to an inverted foetus curled in the womb. The ear lobe corresponds to the head. You may read more about this research in the Handbook to Auriculotherapy (France, 1981).

The correspondence of the ear to the whole body was already recognized by the ancient Chinese acupuncturists and also to the great rishis (teachers) in India, who developed a technique to increase people’s intelligence. Now we know it worked because it was based on the principle of ear acupuncture.

Superbrain Yoga transforms or internally alchemizes the energies from the lower energy centres (or chakras) into higher subtler energies. These energies are then utilized by the upper energy centres. When those centres are highly energized, they energize the brain so it can function with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Superbrain Yoga not only energizes and activates the brain, but also assists in balancing the energies of the heart, throat, ajna, forehead and crown energy centres. (For detailed information on the 11 major energy centres, their location and function please refer to the book The Ancient Science and Art of Pranic Healing by Master Choa Kok Sui). Master Choa explains that the Superbrain squat when done correctly moves energy trapped in the basic and sex chakras through the physical body’s other major energy centers and finally up into the crown chakra or crown energy centre that controls the pineal gland and overall brain health. As the energy moves upward and fills the heart energy centre, the student is filled with love and experiences inner peace or calm. When the energy moves up further into the throat and ajna energy center, the student’s intelligence and creativity are enhanced. Once the energy gets up to the forehead and crown chakras, “it is transformed into subtle pranic energy, which is utilized by the brain for its proper functioning,” writes MCKS (p 52). Educators recognize that students learn best when they are relaxed not anxious, and when they have a fair degree of self-confidence coupled with full attention or focus.

Master Choa Kok Sui also adds: “Other benefits from the practice of Superbrain Yoga are greater psychological stability and also greater ability to regulate the sex drive especially for teenagers” (p 52). After performing the simple, yogic exercise, he explains that one’s “energy centers and aura are brighter. Prolonged practice of the Superbrain Yoga makes the practitioner, in general, smarter and more psychologically balanced.” (p 53)

The Science Behind Superbrain Yoga

The brain is one of the most important organs in our body and controls vital functions including thinking, learning, creativity, the five senses, memory, emotion, problem, solving, and decision making amongst others. Also, different parts of the brain have different functions. For example, left-brain is more logical while the right-brain is more creative.

The electrical potential generated by the brain can be measured by specialized equipment called Electro-encephalograph (or the EEG). The EEG shows four types of patterns which are called the “Brain Waves”. Brain Waves are rhythmic in nature and occur independently on either side of the brain. In general there are four types of brain waves:

  • Alpha Waves which denote a state of relaxation and alertness. These waves form in the mid-brain region. Alpha waves are to do with function such as learning, memory and thinking. The alpha state is the most conducive to creative activities and problem solving. When our brain is in this state we are usually at the best with whatever we do. Typically this is the state which is associated by athletes are being “in the zone” or their peak performance. Also, the creative ideas and inspiration comes when we are in this state. As age advances there is a marked reduction in the Alpha waves.
  • Beta Waves which are mainly seen during everyday activities. These are mostly recorded in the occipital region of the brain. This is the most “normal” brain state and denotes a waking state.
  • Theta Waves are commonly seen in young children and in adults during phases of emotional stress. These are most frequently recorded over the parietal and temporal regions of the brain. The presence of theta wave patterns are seen in many brain disorders.
  • Delta Waves which are created in a state of deep sleep. These are also present during serious brain diseases. It strictly occurs in the cortex region of the brain.

There were several pilot studies conducted on Superbrain Yoga in the early 2000’s. The results were astounding. The following were observed:

  • It was observed that Alpha waves activity increased immediately performing SuperBrain Yoga for only 1 minute.
  • Subjects who performed Superbrain Yoga regularly were found to spend more time in the Alpha state then regular people.
  • During meditation and deep relaxation, the left and right brain wave patterns happen together. Scientists believe that synchronization makes much more brain power available, enables earning large amounts of information quickly and results in greater creativity. Results showed that Superbrain Yoga to synchronise the left brain and right brain energy just after 1 minute of exercising.
  • It was also observed that subjects who performed Superbrain Yoga regularly experienced prolonged periods of our brain synchronicity. In general, when the left-brain and right-brain is synchronised, then one is able to achieve amazing results in any undertaking. This is because both parts of our brains have the same frequency and equally active.

Similar results were also observed based on the research of Late Dr. Joie P. Jones of the Dept. of Radiological Sciences at the University of California, the exercise works using the body’s energy centres which absorb, digest, and distribute energy to different parts of the body. These primary energy centres are actually major acupuncture points. Acupressure energy points for the brain, eyes, forehead, mouth, ovaries, parotid, temples, and testes congregate around the area of the ear affected by pressure from the exercise. In addition, the finger pads used in the exercise stimulate neuropathways into the brain by activating acupuncture points on the earlobes. According to Dr. Jones, after doing the exercise, an EEG scan shows the right and left hemispheres of the brain have synchronized.

The Evidence for Superbrain Yoga

In the USA several pilots have been conducted using Superbrain Yoga. In one pilot study of two classes totaling thirty-six students served as the experimental group while sixteen served as the control group. These students performed the exercise regularly. In that year, 83% of the students in the experimental group improved their standardized tests scores using the GatesMacGinitie Reading Inventory as a measurement tool. The average percentage point change in scores was 24 points for the experimental group. For example, students once scoring 64% on tests were now scoring 88%. In the control group, only 50% of the students improved their test scores with an average percentage change of 14 points.

In another pilot 36 students performing Master Choa Kok Sui’s Superbrain Yoga were compared to a control group of 36 students. Once again, the data reflects that students performing Master Choa Kok Sui’s Superbrain Yoga perform better academically and behaviourally. In this year the experimental group increased test scores by 25% while the control group only increased by 15%. It was also determined through the scientific evaluation of Dr. Eugenius Ang, Jr. (Ph. D Post-doctoral fellow in the department of Neurobiology at Yale University School of Medicine) and Dr. Glenn Joseph Mendoza, (M.D., M.P.H. Practicing Physician and Director of the Neonatology and Neurodevelopment program in Upper State New York and Associate Professor, Clinical Paediatrics at the New York Medical College), that the quality of the experiment has a p value of .0001 which supports that the data collected is statistically and scientifically strong thereby proving the Superbrain Yoga is capable of improving intelligence levels.

In another study Dr Glenn Mendoza MD and Raina Koterba, OTR/L started a pilot study for a group of nine severely autistic children, ranging between the ages of 14 and 16. These children have a variety of issues, including minimal communication, self-abusive behaviors, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, hyperactivity, inattention and cognitive delays. The preliminary findings were quite astounding in relation to the progress of a severely autistic child. At the end of the first week the children who are displaying severe hyperactivity (unable to keep feet or hands still for longer than 15 seconds), were seen to calm for 15 to 20 minutes following the exercise. Children who were consistently yelling or engaging were quiet for about 20 minutes with minimal vocalizations. They also appeared to be very calm and focused.

Another such study performed by Dr Glenn Mendoza MD and Raina Koterba with children have a variety of disabilities, including neurological defects, autism, seizure disorder, cognitive delay and specific learning disabilities. After regular practice of Superbrain it was observed that the children were more focused and ready to work, were displaying less negative behaviors, and were able to follow multi-step directions, with less verbal cues and guidance. Astonishingly some children started displaying strengths the teacher did not know they possessed, and also displayed increased social skills. It was also noticed that a child with very low self-esteem and always saying, “I can’t” and requiring maximal encouragement and coaxing, was engaging in activities with minimal encouragement and independently.

Getting the most from Superbrain Yoga

While Superbrain Yoga is powerful, but the benefits of performing one set of the exercise are temporary in nature. Superbrain Yoga must be done almost everyday to energize and activate the brain cells.

To maximize the benefits of this practice, make it a fun daily habit with your child when getting ready for school or even after school when they need a re-charge. For teenagers, the best way is to lead by example and also make the first 30 days a together practice (proven by first-hand experience). You will start to see results in the first three months of daily repetition, and in about six or seven months your child will improve their cognitive abilities (and average in school) by 20–35%, but by that time what once was just an exercise will become a great habit you’ll want to keep all your life – one that will ensure your next generations grow up healthy and smart.

This exercise is also as important for adults – especially those who are interested in spiritual and self-development. According to Master Choa Kok Sui, one can experience illumination much faster if Superbrain Yoga is practiced before the Twin Hearts Meditation. Hence, it is also an effective way of preparing oneself for an enhanced meditation experience.

At Madurai Pranic Healing Center, we create awareness by explaining the importance of Super Brain Yoga, so that it could be practiced by adults and children for improving their brain health. It may look simple, yet, it’s a powerful exercise that ensures our next generation grows up healthy both physically and mentally. It also helps in spiritual and self-development of everyone.
